SUMMERVILLE, SC - On Saturday, April 28, the aroma of wood smoke once again wafts through ancient live oaks while groups of children laugh and adults dance to the music of bluegrass bands at the Southern Flame Festival. For the eighth year the festival returns to the historic community, The Ponds at 326 Hundred Oaks Pkwy, Summerville, SC 29483.

The Southern Flame Festival is a family friendly event featuring barbecue cooked by competitive teams, music from nationally recognized bluegrass bands, dancing and all-day fun. Gates open at 10:30 AM. The Festival begins at 11:00 AM and runs until 8:00 PM. All day parking is $10 per car. Food and beverage tickets are available for purchase at $1 each. Using tickets, guests have their choice of barbecue taste samples from the cook teams, hamburgers, hot dogs, non-alcoholic beverages and beers.

Troy Powell, event coordinator for the Summerville Miracle League which organizes the event said, “We’re excited to put on another outstanding event this year. There’s nothing more Southern than this event with barbecue, bluegrass and families gathered under these incredible live oaks at The Ponds. We expect almost 4,000 people to come out and enjoy more than 1,300 pounds of barbecue from these fiercely competitive cook teams.”

Award-winning Lonesome River Band headlines the event and plays from 6:30 – 8:00 PM. Lonesome River is led by Sammy Shelor, a five-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year, and winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. The band has a 35-year legacy of performing outstanding bluegrass music.

On stage from 12:00 – 2 PM is Common Ground, led by award-winning and Grammy nominated, Alan Bibey.

The Southern Flame Festival barbecue competition is sanctioned by the Southern BBQ Network (SBN). Awards are presented to the cook teams from 3:00 – 4:00 PM by judges who are accredited by the SBN.

The Southern Flame Festival benefits the Summerville Miracle League (SML), a non-profit organization with the sole mission of affording opportunities for all persons with special needs in the Dorchester County. One of the most well-known programs of SML is their adaptive baseball program. The Festival is the organizations only annual fundraising event.
