Mt Pleasant Wando River Waterside Chairs

In the north end of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina’s fourth largest city, you’ll find a bustling area where new residents have been flocking to amenity-rich neighborhoods located around Highway 41 and Highway 17.  It’s no surprise as Mount Pleasant is the fastest-growing small city in the country!  They are attracted to the superior schools, convenient shopping, extensive recreational options and proximity to beaches.  Imagine these benefits painted with the backdrop of a vibrant Lowcountry landscape… a stunning scene of expansive marshes interwoven with tidal waterways, and that’s what you’ll find. This little pocket of Charleston County is rich in history and attractions that are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Communities like Riverside at Carolina Park, Dunes West and  Park West have become a very desirable address as Mount Pleasant’s population has more than doubled in the last two decades.  This growth has been met with tremendous support as new schools, a hospital, a library, gyms and retail have all come to the area, making convenience a number one priority. Local government is also addressing growth in this corridor and they are diligently working to improve existing infrastructure, insuring the best in livability and safety for community residents.

For your weekday lifestyle, everything you need is likely nearby. Publix, Harris Teeter, Wal-Mart Supercenter and a brand-new Lowes Foods have your grocery list covered—if you’re going for the ultimate in convenience, shop online and give curbside pick-up a try! Health care options are diverse and range in size from small primary care practices and dentist offices, to Health First Urgent Care right at the intersection of 17 and 41, to Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital with easy Hwy 17 access near Carolina Park. You’ll find a half dozen pharmacies in this area too.

The schools serving this area are new and highly regarded. Carolina Park Elementary opened its doors in August of 2017 and has quickly received a rating as “excellent” by the South Carolina Department of Education.  Pinckney Elementary, Laurel Hill Primary and Cario Middle schools are in walking distance for many students living in this area.  Also rated as “excellent” is highly lauded Wando High School with more than 250 course selections with AP and dual credit options, as well as a spectacular sports program and opportunities in music and arts. Wando Center for Advanced Studies operates in a partnership with Trident Technical College and bridges the gap between college and high school, training nearly 600 students with advanced technical skills. Oceanside Collegiate Academy is a smaller-scale charter high school providing a rigorous academic curriculum. Area residents of all ages can broaden their horizons at the Wando Mount Pleasant Public Library, newly opened in May of 2019.

Despite high traffic volumes, you’ll find an impressive availability of roadways and an interconnectedness that lends itself well to these neighborhoods.  Rather than hitting the main roads, you can travel through Dunes West, Park West, and Carolina Park with ease.  Options for commuting in and out of the area are Highway 41, Highway 17 and very nearby, I-526. It’s a quick trip to many major employers like Blackbaud or Boeing in Daniel Island and North Charleston.  Speaking of employers, it’s worth pointing out that Mt. Pleasant ranked #1 in the state for median household income growth at 7.58% per the US Census Bureau, with a median household income of $90,454.

Its fifteen minutes to the pristine beaches at Isle of Palms and twenty minutes to historic Downtown Charleston.  Charleston County has big visions for this area and is in the planning stages of bringing a new innovative system of roads to the Highway 41/17 interchange.  This is part of a large, $130 million-dollar plan that also includes widening Highway 41 from two lanes.

On weekends the world is your oyster in this part of town.  Tour one of America’s oldest working plantations or attend a variety of year-long festivals at antebellum-era Boone Hall Plantation.  Whether it’s Boone Hall Fright Night or the Lowcountry Oyster Festival, there’s sure to be something to appeal to everyone.  Fun fact, scenes from Boone Hall appear in both Gone with the Wind and The Notebook.  Be sure to take advantage of some of their fresh produce either from the U-pick fields or from the Boone Hall Farms Market.  There are great retail options from big-name brands and local stores alike at the Market at Oakland or just down the road at Mt. Pleasant Towne Centre.  You can catch a movie and dinner as well.  You’ll find a great and diverse selection of restaurants in this part of town like local favorites Jack’s Cosmic Dogs or enjoy innovative cuisine at On Forty-One.  Relish in a staycation at the Mount Pleasant/Charleston KOA.  In addition to the beaches, marinas and recreation on the water, Awendaw Passage, part of the Palmetto Trail, offers scenic waterfront trails that are just a short drive away.  Or hit the greens at Arthur Hills designed Dunes West Golf Club.

If you’re looking for a superior selection of designer homes in communities that combine ease of living with an incredible lifestyle, this area of Mt. Pleasant fits the bill.
