Characteristics of Summerville

Organized around an historic square lined with distinctive shops, the older part of Summerville aligns north and south of U.S. Highway 17-A which forms the town’s Main Street. Parts of Summerville are located in each of the three counties: Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester. Interstate 26 intersects Hwy 17-A and it is in this vicinity where a great number of new master planned neighborhoods like Nexton, the state’s first Gigabit community, Carnes Crossroads, and Cane Bay are being built. At the other end of Hwy 17-A are more large planned communities such as Summers Corner, The Ponds and Poplar Grove with smaller neighborhoods popping up as well.

Education in Summerville is provided by both Berkeley and Dorchester County District II. Many of the schools in the town are highly acclaimed. There are 21 schools in Dorchester District II — and many are ranked as great schools. Summerville High School’s Greenwaves galvanized the town with Friday night hometown football.

Summerville Medical Center is highly rated and serves the community with a full assortment of medical services, including an emergency room and labor and delivery / obstetrical services.

Local and national retail in Summerville

Summerville is home to many unique boutiques around Hutchinson Square ranging from art galleries to wine shops to clothing stores. Many pubs, cafés, and restaurants are located in the older part of Summerville too. Azalea Square is Summerville’s outdoor mall retail center anchored by Target, Kohl's and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

Summerville things to see and do

Summerville has a fun atmosphere enhanced by the DREAM organization's Third Thursdays. During this monthly event, shops remain open until 8 p.m., restaurants have outdoor seating and bands often play in Short Central Street — a pedestrian mall lined with galleries, craft shops and unusual emporiums. Every Saturday morning, in season, the Farmers’ Market happens in the heart of downtown. Carnes’ Crossroads Big Green Barn hosts a Farmers’ Market Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 – 6:30.

Each April, one of the state’s largest craft fairs, The Flowertown Festival, spills out of Azalea Park onto Main Street. Art and craft vendors, amusements and delights abound at this beloved event.

For boating enthusiasts the headwaters of the Ashley River are located in Summerville. The Herbert H. Jessen Public Boat Landing is a great place to fish and launch a power or paddle boat. Trails along the Ashley River allow you to get out in nature and hike in the woodlands at Rosebrock Park.

Summerville has a wide selection of national production homebuilders and local and regional builders offering a tremendous array of plans. Many of the new homes' exterior elevations
being built in Summerville are in the farmhouse style or have Victorian trim, alluding to the city’s small-town DNA. But don’t let that fool you--these builders’ communities have “fiber to the home” cabling and underground wiring as well as the latest in finishes and fixtures.
